Sutton Lane Ends

Sutton Lane Ends, often simply referred to as Sutton, is a semi-rural village situated roughly a couple of miles south of Macclesfield and it includes the hamlets of Gurnett and Jarman.

Sutton is in the county of Cheshire and the unitary authority of Cheshire East. The rivers Bollin and Rossendale run through the village as does the Macclesfield canal.

The population of the entire parish is roughly 2,500 and whilst in the past the community was centred on farming and forestry these days most people travel to nearby Macclesfield or the Manchester area for employment.

Sutton has had an Anglican church, Sutton St James, since 1840. The community has a village shop, post office, farm shop and several pubs – so Sutton is certainly a place you won’t go thirsty.

The village is served by Hollinhey Primary School for pupils aged 4 to 11 and following on from this children usually attend one of the four High Schools in Macclesfield – All Hallows Catholic College, The Fallibroome Academy, The Macclesfield Academy or Tytherington High School.

Charles Tunnicliffe, the renowned naturalistic painter of British birds and wildlife, spent his early years living on a farm on Walker Lane in Sutton. His work is still celebrated with the Charles and Winifred Tunnicliffe Memorial Art Competition, which is held annualy at Hollinhey Primary School.

The engineer and canal builder James Brindley (1716-1772) did his apprenticeship in Gurnett in about 1733. A plaque commemorating this fact can still be seen on Plough Cottage.

Sutton is a great place to live – thinking of moving here – don’t hesitate – you’ll love it.
